The college is named after the late Bishop James Mar Theophilus of Thiruvalla. It began operating in 1956 under the auspices of Kerala University (then Travancore University) on the campus of Mar Ivanios College. Later the Institute was moved to a new campus (now Sarvodaya Vidyalaya Campus) and operated there for several decades. In order to fully meet NCTE standards, a self-contained educational complex with futuristic infrastructure was built in 2001. The new college building was dedicated and blessed by the late Major Archbishop Cyril Baselios Catholicos. The NCTE expert team that visited the facility recognized the university's infrastructure and academic excellence.
