Maharshi Dayanand University established in 1976 as Rohtak University, Rohtak, came into existence by Act No. 25 of 1975 of the Haryana Legislative Assembly 1976  named after the saint Dayananda Saraswati. The University campus is spread over an area of 622 acres. MDU offers undergraduate arts and engineering programs that award a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) or Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree. The college also gives postgraduate programs that lead to Master of Technology (M.Tech), Master of Science (MSc) through research, Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Computer Applications (MCA), and doctorate (Ph.D.). The MSc and Ph.D. study degrees at the same time as the rest are taught degrees.

The university was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2019 with a grade of A+ at CGPA 3.44 out of an overall 4.00. Admission to MBA, MA, M.Com is offered as per the Marriott secured by the applicants in the KUKCET entrance test. It is followed by GD and PI rounds. Aspirants willing to get admission for the M.tech course at MDU, Rohtak must have a valid GATE score for the selection process. B.tech admission to MDU seats is offered based on the HSTES counseling processor as per merit in JEE Mains exam. For Integrated courses, LLM, M.Sc, and M.Pharm courses, the university conducts separate entrance tests for MDUCEE. The merit of the entrance is considered for selecting shortlisted candidates.
