The University of Mysore was established on 27 July 1916. It is the sixth oldest university in the country and the first in the state of Karnataka. Moreover, in a way, it is the first university in the country to be established outside the borders of British India. The university was established as a result of the efforts of the benevolent and visionary Maharaja of the former Princely State of Mysore, His Highness Shri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar - IV (1884-1940) and the then Diwan Sir M. Visvesvaraya (1860-1962). It was the first university to be accredited with five stars by NAAC in 2000. The university is located in Mysuru, the cultural center of Karnataka. Mysuru was the capital of the Wadiyar dynasty. It is a city of palaces, temples, and gardens. Being a great tourist center with historical monuments and unique architecture, it is famous for silk, sandalwood oil, and ivory and sandalwood. The city has a healthy climate throughout the year. It is approximately 140 km southwest of the state capital Bengaluru and is well connected by rail, road, and air.

Community Radio:

The University of Mysore is one of the State University established Radio Manasa 89.6FM, Community Radio Station (CRS) in 2021. The community radio station was established with the aim of broadcasting education-based programs through radio with a greater focus on education. The programs are particularly beneficial for both students and the local community. CRS focuses primarily on socio-cultural and educational programs that benefit both students and the community. We also focus on sensitization on water conservation, gender equality, career guidance, life skills, health counseling and healthcare, etc. as per the guidelines of Information and Broadcasting, New Delhi, and CRS.

The library collection has grown since the days of His Highness Maharaja Shri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar. He encouraged the construction of a needs-based library at the Raja Free School and also encouraged reading habits in academic circles as early as the middle of the 19th century.
